NURSERY & RECEPTION DEPARTMENT(3-5 YEARS)
Age: 3 -5 years
We aim to provide a broad and balanced early years curriculum with lots of opportunities for first-hand experience, through concrete and structural activities (Montessori and Contemporary methods) within the nursery dept. We have two groups: the rising 3’s -4’s and 5’s. This strategy helps us to care for each group’s specific needs, albeit all groups still participate in joint activities in order that the overall goals of the nursery department are achieved.
THE PRE PREP DEPARTMENT(6-8 YEARS)
The pre-prep depart has children from 6 to 8 years. Emphasis on the basic skills, which have been established in the nursery and reception department, continues and the pace of work quickens. Between ages six and seven, we strive to ensure that the children will be reading at least a year ahead of their chronological age. At this stage more sophisticated language skills are rigorously encouraged. Their curriculum coverage enables the students to perform above average, except special needs children. In each academic session, there are two modules. Students are expected to master each module of attainment before progressing to the final module.
THE PREP DEPARTMENT (9-11 YEARS)
The Prep department has children from 9 to 11 years. At this level the children continue to improve and expand their programme of learning and skills with curriculum broadening to include Social studies, RE, Philosophy, Verbal reasoning. Learning is augmented through an in-depth use of textbooks, and contemporary IT learning programmes which are carefully structured, flexible and differentiated with a variety of teaching and assessment methods. The students are challenged and encouraged to realize their full academic potential.
Programme of Learning and Activities
Activities at our nursery are planned to help develop the children’s skills, knowledge and attitude in the following areas of skills:
• Personal, Social, Spiritual and Emotional development
• Communication, Language and literacy
• Mathematical development
• Knowledge and understanding of the world
• Physical development
• Creative development
These categories support the ten areas of our curriculum and other skills in the Montessori activities which are:
• Introductory skills, Development of fine and gross motor skills
• Exercises for Social skills
• Exercises for care of self and environment
• Sensorial exercises
• Logic and problem solving
This balance is important both in developing children’s independence and ability to make choices, and to work towards given tasks when asked to do so. This structure also ensures our children experience a full range of activities.
Assessment
Progress is constantly monitored through observation and indirect assessments. Parents are always welcome to discuss their child’s profile report as well as join in “bonding activities”. A transition record is produced at the end of the year and passed on to the children’s new teacher to aid smooth and happy movement.
Nursery Environment
The nursery environment ensures that all the children feel included, secure and valued. Our setting has a strong “homely and nurturing” environment which is both stimulating and child friendly. Children enjoy enhancing outdoor and indoor activities.
Naturally, during the day, children have ample breaks in the morning and afternoon as well as quiet times. Our small class size system enables us to give personal attention to the children’s needs.
AGE (10/11+)
AT age 10/11, the children proceed to junior secondary education.
Undoubtedly the years between 3 and 11 are valued in this academy as the most important in a child’s learning process. Hence, during these years, CHIA endeavours to recognize potentials, give motivation and form habits of diligence, self-discipline and determination.
